I just stood by Aka-Nung Udoe Road by Tranquility Hotel, Uyo and saw this young lad approaching me to help him with money to eat. I asked him what is your name and he responded. I asked again where is your mother and he said the mother is late. I asked where is your father and he said that he is nowhere to be found. He was pleading me to give him money to eat and he was trying to wear something close to shirt even under this cool weather.
When I turned my back I saw an uncompleted building with few of those boys numbering about 10 or thereabout. I was just imagining how they feed themselves and behold few other children were coming out to pick waste food from the waste bin. I am still thinking how those children that were born by parents and celebrated are now eating from the waste bin.
I am still thinking if the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is still caring for street children in the state; and if the answer is in the affirmative, there is, therefore, the urgent need for the Ministry to take responsibility by arresting the situation, help those children and reform them. If we failed to cater for them, they are potential kidnappers, armed robbers, 419ners, scammers, etc. The distance between their location and Ministry Children Home is just a few meters away. Let's see how we can help these children before they become a threat to our lives. It is not only for the government but all the citizens should be involved.
